Sony Not Tied To Android, Open To Windows Phone If It Becomes Popular

Sony recently completed the buyout of Sony Ericson and now calls the wholly-owned subsidiary Sony Mobile Communications. With this change comes updated Android devices and lofty gaming plans with their Android PlayStation suite d SDK. Sounds like Sony is all in with the big green robot.
Not so fast. Earlier, we learned that Sony may consider expanding their Vita OS platform to smartphones and tablets in the future. Now, we are hearing from Stephen Sneeden, Product Marketing Manager of the Xperia line, that they are open to the possibility of using Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform, but there are currently no solid plans because “no one really cares about Windows Phone“, at least not at the moment.
Basically, Sony does not want to close the door on any future possibilities and partnerships. This is a smart move since the mobile landscape is in no way solidified. Even though Android and iOS seem to be the two dominant platforms right now, the winds could change any time, and Sony does not want to be left in the dust should that happen.
Even though Sony has been putting Android to good use, they posted a $325 million loss for fiscal 2011, stating that intense competition in the lower end Android market has hurt their bottom line. This is enough of an incentive to keep their eyes open and work on back up plans, including Vita OS and now apparently Windows Phone as well. Right now, they have no plans to stop using Android, and if they can turn things around, there’s a good chance they’ll stick around. There’s also no reason they couldn’t test the waters with another platform in tandem with Android.
Other manufacturers, namely HTC, Samsung and LG, have already released devices running Windows Phone, though they don’t move nearly as well as their respective Android-based devices. In this economy, it’s prudent to not keep all your eggs in one basket, even if that basket is the Green Basket of Android’s Meteoric Rise.
